Dress Code Guidelines for Graduates

Dear Ralston Valley High School Senior and Parents,

Your high school education  is rapidly coming to a close.  On behalf of the entire staff at Ralston Valley High School, congratulations for all of your positive accomplishments.

Ralston Valley High School is pleased to invite all graduates to participate in the 2018 commencement exercises.  Please understand that commencement and related activities are formal ceremonies structured in the traditional manner.  Included on this website you will find a summary of coming events, including graduation.  Participation in these activities is completely voluntary.   After you have reviewed the summary, you will be asked to indicate whether you wish to participate.  While participation is optional and not required for the issuance of a diploma, there are expectations for the dress and the behavior of all who choose to participate.

We are committed to providing a graduation ceremony where students will have their "place in the spotlight."  A graduation committee has worked diligently to organize and provide a ceremony that affords each graduate the opportunity to be recognized. The staff at RVHS feels strongly that no one should be allowed to disrupt or distract from any student's recognition or the honors accorded to the class as a whole.  We are asking for respectful audience behavior, both from the graduates and friends/family in the seating area.

Because we feel so strongly about providing recognition for each graduate and for a dignified ceremony, any student causing a disruption or behaving inappropriately will be removed from the ceremony and will not receive his or her diploma that day.  In that event, diplomas may be picked up at the school on May 22.

Understanding the nature of our graduation ceremony should help students and families decide if they wish to participate.

Knowing our expectations, we ask that both the parent and graduate indicate their choice on the contract, which is may be accessed by clicking her or visiting the Graduation webpage.  A hard copy may be also picked-up in, signed, and returned to the main office.  Students choosing not to participate in the graduation ceremony may pick up their diploma at RVHS on May 22 between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.  Any Senior without a signed contract will not be permitted to participate in the graduation ceremony.

We are very proud of the efforts and accomplishments of the Class of 2018.  We would like their closing ceremony to match that level of achievement.  Congratulations to each graduating member of the Class of 2018.  We look forward to seeing you on May 18.

Sincerely,
Ralston Valley High School Administration

ALL graduates must wear the authorized graduation cap, gown, and tassel. In addition, graduates may wear up to two honor cords and two academic medals (if earned). Students should not add any other accessories, decorations, or carry any placards, posters or any other paraphernalia that might distract from the ceremony.

Dress attire under the gown should comply with all school dress code guidelines and should reflect the importance and dignity of the occasion (i.e. dress shirts and slacks with dress shoes or dresses/dress attire and dress shoes). The processional is down the Southwest and Southeast stairs, which are steep and lengthy (66 stairs and no railing). Ladies should avoid shoes that have more than a 3" heel.

Please be aware that once we leave the school you will not be allowed to re-enter. Therefore, you are advised not to bring a purse, backpack, etc. that day or leave it locked in your car.

Graduates must not engage in any acts of rowdiness, noisy behavior, or misconduct.  Graduates must conduct themselves properly before, during, and immediately following the ceremony so the ceremony will be meaningful to everyone in attendance.

Lifetouch, our official commencement photographer, will have portraits available online approximately one week after the ceremony.
